Tuesday 9 September, 10-4 p.m.: Workshop: Kasuti Embroidery with Sujaya Mahesh of Sameeksha Studio & School of Embroidery

The Pavilion, Museum Of The Home, 136 Kingsland Road, London E2 8EA

Sameeksha Studio & School of Embroidery
, founded by Sujaya Mahesh—a former Professor of Home Science—is committed to reviving the fading art of Indian hand embroidery, particularly Kasuti, a traditional form from Karnataka. Drawing on her extensive teaching experience and research, Sujaya has developed a rich curriculum that not only preserves heritage but also empowers women through skill-building and self-reliance. Her passion for Kasuti stems from its deep historical roots, dating back to the 7th century BC (Chalukya Dynasty), and her belief that it deserves the same recognition as other Indian embroidery styles.

Sameeksha is more than a school—it’s a movement to sustain and celebrate India's embroidery traditions. Sujaya views embroidery as a legacy lovingly passed down through generations and sees her mission as both cultural preservation and women’s empowerment.

This workshop will showcase Kasuti Embroidery, known for its reversible designs and motifs inspired by temple architecture, animals, and flora. Traditionally embroidered on Ilkal sarees, Kasuti involves meticulous thread-counting to produce perfectly symmetrical patterns. At the event, participants will create Kasuti bookmarks, offering hands-on experience with this intricate technique and a chance to engage with a centuries-old craft in a modern, meaningful way.

Sujaya Mahesh has been devoted to embroidery from an early age—initially inspired by her mother and later enriched through formal studies in Home Science. After teaching Textiles, Clothing, and Interior Design at Mount Carmel College in Bengaluru, India, for 18 years, she founded Sameeksha Studio and School of Embroidery.

A serendipitous discovery of Kasuti embroidery in Hubli ignited a 25‑year passion to revive and reimagine this intricate, ancient craft. She is dedicated to bridging tradition with contemporary design, collaborating closely with skilled artisans to breathe new life into Kasuti’s cultural heritage.

All materials provided, and all skill levels are welcome. You will leave with a Kasuti bookmark, along with the skills and confidence to continue developing your embroidery practice at home.
